Our Approach
Our work focuses on changing behavior in real-world situations, not just in controlled settings. We look at what’s driving the behavior and build a plan that helps your dog feel more comfortable, capable, and understood.
We use positive reinforcement to create better associations, build practical skills, and develop emotional regulation without the use of force or intimidation. At the same time, we put clear management in place to prevent overwhelm and stop unwanted behaviors from being repeatedly practiced.
Every plan is tailored to the individual dog, with an emphasis on clear communication, structure, and steady, sustainable progress.
About
Kim Letteer
Hi, I’m Kim-- the trainer behind Letteer Dog Training. I came into this work through my own experience living with a severely reactive dog for over a decade.
At the same time, I was involved in rescue—fostering, volunteering, and seeing dogs surrendered or euthanized for behavior. That combination drove me to better understand behavior and find a humane way to help.
I’m a graduate of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) Professional Dog Training Science & Application program, and I’m always continuing my education through courses like Masters in Aggression and Cultivate Calm for Instructors, along with conferences, webinars, and ongoing study. Understanding the why behind behavior—and helping people actually make sense of it—is a big part of what I do.
Rescue has always been at the center of my world. I started volunteering in 2012 with Gracie’s Guardians, formerly the pit bull initiative of Richmond Animal League, and I still dedicate a significant amount of time each month to volunteer work. Many of the dogs I work with come from that world, and it’s something I’ll always stay closely connected to.
There’s nothing better than watching a misunderstood dog and an overwhelmed guardian begin to understand each other and find their footing together.
